The Intertextuality Relationship Between The Stories Of...

The intertextuality relationship between the stories of, â€Å"Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been†, and â€Å"Young Goodman Brown†. Both share a modern gothic, interpretation that investigates the dark side of the human nature. Each story carries out hidden connotation while together have comparable mayhem galore. Both stories have a well-defined central commotion, articulated in ways where both characters in each story confront a surreal event. Giving more clear understanding of its hidden meaning. Ultimately, I will describe the hidden interpretations in each story and the similar hidden association with both characters encountering the devil. Confronted by the†¦show more content†¦Connie and Young Goodman Brown have different story settings in the way they encounter the â€Å"Devil† but none the less they both face an unhuman type being, who resemble the Devil in such a bizarre way. Without hindsight of what such evil events was to come. Connie description of Arnold Friend, a hunting character personifies the Devil, he goes by the name of Arnold Friend, â€Å"Wearing a wig and brought the stems down behind his ears† (Oates 267). Clearly in the bible we know that the devil is the only one who’s is able to appear in different disguise, for he is the only one who can disguise as anything. Arnold Friend is wearing a wig, which is lopsided giving a hint for possible horns. As stated by journalist Kalpakian, â€Å"So omnipresent are the evil acts and consequences that the character faces† (1). This gives validation of what evil Connie is dealing with. Her description of Arnold Friend wearing some boots that he consistently has to adjust, â€Å"†¦the boots must have been stuffed with something so that he would seem taller† (Oates 270). This can be perhaps of him having hooves. Another thing that makes Arnold Friend, resemble the devil is that he seems to be very familiar with Connie’s life, and family whereabouts.
